1. Bossam: Steal the Fate (May 1)
After starring in the rebooted version of The Sound of Your Heart in 2018, Kwon Yuri has never again appeared on the small screen. Bossom: Steal the Fate, MBN’s latest drama that will be present as the opening in May, is his comeback drama after three years of absence. In the drama, one of SNSD’s personnel collided with actor Jung Il-woo, who previously played in Sweet Munchies (2020).
Set in the Joseon dynasty, the Korean drama Bossam: Steal the Fate tells the story of a man, Ba Wo (Jung Il-woo) who is trapped in a conspiracy that requires him to hide his true identity and become a poor man. Ba Woo also has to do various illegal things such as stealing to support himself. In the end, he accidentally kidnaps the royal princess, Princess Soo Kyung (Kwon Yuri) who is the daughter of King Gwanghae and daughter-in-law of Lee Yi-cheom (Lee Jae-young), Ba Woo’s enemy.
2. Youth of May (May 3)
2020-2021 can be said to be the golden year of young actor Lee Doo-Hyun. In the past two years, he has frequently appeared on the small screen starring in various famous dramas. His most recent drama that will air at this time is Youth of May. This drama is also a reunion for him and Go Min-si after previously meeting in Sweet Home (2020).
As the title suggests, Youth of May is set in May 1980. It tells the love story of a medical student and a nurse at the time during the Gwangju Rebellion. Hwang Hee-Tae (Lee Do-Hyun) is a smart and unyielding medical student. Meanwhile, Kim Myung-hee (Go Min-si) is known to be fun and has worked as a nurse for three years.
3. Imitation (May 7)
This Korean drama adapted from a webtoon of the same name tells the story of the lives of K-Pop idols in the Korean entertainment industry. To explore the story presented in Imitation, the players who were recruited were some K-Pop idols. Like Lee Jun-young U-KISS, three Ateez personnel namely Seong Hwa, San, and Jong Ho, and Lim Na-young who was previously a member of the girl group Pristin.
Imitation tells of Ma Ha (Jung Ji-so) who is a member of the Teaparty group, along with Yoo Ri-a (Minseo) and Sim Hyun-Ji (Lim Na-young). Since their debut, they have never achieved success. Until finally, Teaparty participated in a reality show and met with group members Shax and Sparkling. However, one of Shax’s personnel, Kwon Ryeok (Lee Jun-young) doesn’t like Ma-ha, who often imitates the appearance of the popular singer Ra Ri-ma (Park Ji-Yeon).
4. Mine (May 8)
Ready for the last two episodes of Vincenzo this weekend? Don’t worry, tvN has prepared a replacement for the Vincenzo slot with the latest drama thriller genre entitled Mine. This drama will present the story of two women who try to find their identity and free themselves from the world’s prejudices.
Seo Hee-soo (Lee Bo-young) is a famous actress who gave up her career to marry the second son of a chaebol family, which owns Hyowon Group. Meanwhile, Jung Seo-hyun (Kim Seo-Hyung) married the eldest son of the same family as Seo Hee-soo. These two women also did their best to fit in as daughter-in-law of the family.
5. Doom at Your Service (10 May)
This tvN drama became a comeback drama for the two main characters, namely Seo In-guk and Park Bo-young. Park Bo-young last appeared on the small screen in 2019 through the drama Abyss and Seo In-guk in the drama The Smile Has Left Your Eyes (2018). Interestingly, throughout his second career in TV dramas, Seo In-guk has made two cameo appearances in dramas starring Park Bo-young. These include Oh My Ghost (2015) and Abyss (2019).
Carrying a fantasy theme, Doom at Your Service tells the story of the meeting of Tak Dong-Kyung (Park Bo-young) who is an editor at a web novel company with Myul Mang (Seo In-guk). Myul Mang suddenly appears in Dong-kyung’s life and makes Dong-Kyung sign a 100-day contract to risk his life. Myul Mang himself lived as a messenger between gods and humans who followed destiny without any intention.
6. Move to Heaven (May 14)
Even though Taxi Driver isn’t finished yet, but Lee Je-hoon’s latest Korean drama is about to air again! Yep, the actor Kim Do-ki in Taxi Driver is back in the latest Netflix drama entitled Move to Heaven. This drama is adapted from the non-fiction essay by Kim Shae-byeol entitled Things Left Behind which tells the story of his life after his father died.
The drama Move to Heaven tells the story of Han Geu-roo (Tang Joon-sang), a young man who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome. He runs his father’s business called Move to Heaven, a service that organizes items left behind by the dead.
After his father’s death, his uncle, Jo Sang-Koo (Lee Je-hoon) comes and becomes his guardian. His uncle is an ex-convict who is desperate for his life.
7. Racket Boys (May 17)
This sports-themed drama was directed by director Jo Young-Kwang who is known for his great works, namely Defendant (2017) and Heart Surgeons (2018). Racket Boys tells the story of the struggles of 16 teenage boys and girls who became national-level badminton players.
The story will focus on Ra Young-Ja (Oh Na-ra) who is a former legendary badminton athlete. He is now the coach of the Haenam Seo Middle School badminton team in a rural area. Even though he was not very good at first, he succeeded in making the students grow when participating in the junior athletic championships.
Bonus: My Roommate Is a Gumiho (26 May)
Who misses seeing Hyeri appear on the small screen? The role of Sung Deok-sun in Reply 1988 will be present in the latest tvN drama titled My Roommate Is a Gumiho. In this drama, Hyeri will compete acting with actor Jang Ki-young, who last played in the drama Born Again (2020). Girls already miss you too, don’t you see Jang Ki-young’s sweet smile?
My Roommate Is A Gumiho is iQIYI’s first Korean drama and marks the collaboration between China and Korea. This latest drama is adapted from a webtoon of the same name about the love story of a gumiho and a human. Shin Woo-yeo (Jang Ki-Yong) is a 999-year-old gumiho (nine-tailed fox) who works as a professor.
Well, to become a human, he had to collect human energy in beads. Meanwhile, Lee Dam (Hyeri) accidentally swallowed the beads collected by the gumiho and it could threaten Lee Dam’s life. The two decide to stay together until they find a solution.
